Various injectable hormone medications are used to control the cycle and stimulate the ovaries to develop as many follicles as possible. Follicles are the sacs which contain eggs prior to their release via ovulation. All eggs are retrieved to the extent possible.

A woman administers her own daily shots prior to egg retrieval. After embryo transfer, some self-administered injections continue at least until a pregnancy test has been concluded.
